About WRITING
I was born to American parents in Guatemala. I was raised there during my formative years, and I spent extensive periods throughout all of Central and North America. My home is now in Memphis, TN. It is a city with a ton of amazing people, countless trees, longstanding and complex problems, and a place of potential and hope.
Writing has been a constant companion since my teenage years. It’s a practice that feels intrinsic to my identity. I grew up speaking three languages. Writing feels like a language because it is a mechanism for sharing and understanding thoughts between writer and reader.
I will write whether others read, and if they do, regardless of whether what is read is liked. That said, more than half of the emotional payoff for me from writing is whether what I wrote does one or both of the following:
- It resonates with another person, even just one, and makes them feel connected, released, understood, or present at the scene in the life of a stranger. The last of these is found most often in short stories.
- It helps others better understand something or at least offers a variation on how to consider a situation or topic. Ideally, it helps others do or be better, whether the topic is leadership, decision-making, or something complex that offers a new meaning.
